Search the Washington County Court Docket

Stillwater's landmark old courthouse is a museum now; the working files live at the Washington County Government Center, where Court Administration serves one of the busier benches in the Tenth Judicial District. Search remotely before visiting. The judicial branch's statewide tool converts a name, case number, or citation into the public register of actions behind the Washington County court docket, with hearing settings and downloadable filings where the rules allow. A birth year trims the long name lists a suburban county generates. The counter and public terminals at the government center cover certified copies, older cases, and record types remote users cannot open, and calendars post for every courtroom.

Washington County Docket Search Modes

MCRO splits its public tools. A case number, a hearing date, and a money judgment are three different questions. Case Search covers the broadest ground. Document Search needs a case number and returns whatever public documents are online. Hearing Search accepts a name, case number, judicial officer, attorney, or hearing date. Judgment Search sticks to docketed monetary judgments and satisfactions. It will not surface every case outcome.

Using MCRO costs nothing. Public documents are free to view there, though the system is not the certified official record.

Inside a Washington County Court Docket

Inside MCRO, a Washington County court docket shows up as Case Details plus the Register of Actions. The category label alone tells you nothing about the outcome. Read down the event list. Check the disposition entered. Some entries point to a document index number with no downloadable file behind it. Party street addresses and comment fields stay off the remote view, and protected material can be withheld from the public docket entirely.

Case numberA local identifier such as 82-CR-26-... or 82-CV-26-..., with the case category embedded in the observed pattern.
Parties and attorneysPublic names and roles where available, not every protected identifier or address.
Case eventsThe dated Register of Actions entries for filings, notices, motions, and other activity.
Hearing dataScheduled date, location, judicial officer, hearing type, and connection information where public.
DispositionThe court's listed outcome or status. Read it rather than inferring an outcome from a category label.

Washington County Docket Number Clues

Washington County case numbers carry the county prefix 82 plus category letters. Criminal files run 82-CR-YY-..., civil matters 82-CV-YY-..., and conciliation cases 82-CO-YY-.... Family cases show 82-FA-YY-..., probate 82-PR-YY-..., juvenile 82-JV-YY-..., and hearing-officer traffic matters 82-VB-YY-.... Treat these as clues drawn from the live calendar rather than an official county code manual.

Note that MCRO rejects spaces in a case-number search. And if a name search keeps missing a pending matter, a case number, citation number, attorney name, or attorney license number will often work better than repeating the same broad docket search.

Washington County Courts and Their Dockets

Washington County runs on a single state trial court. That court is the Minnesota District Court, sitting locally as Washington County District Court. Criminal, traffic, civil, conciliation, family, juvenile, probate, and mental-health cases are all divisions of that one court. There is no separate county clerk system for each. City parking tickets and administrative citations may start at a city office. Any state-court complaint moves through Washington County District Court.

Washington County Courthouse Access

MCRO is convenient but incomplete. The Minnesota Public Access Courthouse terminals, called MNPAC, sit inside district courthouses at no charge. They offer the fuller electronic view of court records. An older file, a record shut out of remote access, or a document listed without a download? MNPAC is the practical next step. The public counter can also handle paper files, microfilm, and certified-copy requests.

Official Washington County court information places the active District Court and Court Administration at 14949 62nd Street North in Stillwater. The old courthouse at 101 West Pine Street now serves as a history and parks site. It is not a working docket counter.

The court's courthouse history explains how the modern Government Center differs from the 1869 landmark. That helps when an old address shows up in a record or a local history account.

Washington County court docket historic courthouse reference

That distinction matters for visitors. Court records, terminals, and counter service all operate at the current court location, not the historic site.

How to Find Court Dates and Settings

Chase a court date through the official chain. Start with your citation, summons, or notice of hearing. Then try MCRO Hearing Search or Case Details. After that come the Washington public calendar and, finally, a call to Court Administration. The searchable Washington County calendar PDF lists hearing location, date, time, and judicial officer. It also gives hearing type, connection type, and case number. Remember, it is a schedule of settings, not the full case register.

The calendar posts at 7 a.m. on business days and gets hourly updates. Lobby and courtroom screens are even more current. A line missing from the PDF does not mean a hearing was canceled. For a fuller walkthrough, see Washington County court dates.

The Washington County court page identifies the District Court's official location and contacts.

Washington County Calendar Warnings

Confidential and non-remotely-accessible matters never reach the public calendar. Courtroom, judge, and connection assignments can shift after the PDF posts, too. A Zoom or other connection field on the calendar is logistics only. It promises no public video link. For anything time-sensitive, rely on the current case register, a filed notice or order, or direct confirmation from the court.

First Appearance
An initial criminal court event shown on the calendar.
Omnibus Hearing
A criminal pretrial hearing dealing with motions, evidence, or other case issues.
Scheduling Conference
A civil setting used to organize deadlines and later proceedings.
Hearing Officer Appointment
A Washington traffic-contest setting.

Calendar labels describe what a setting is for. They say nothing about how the case comes out.

Public Access to Court Dockets

Access to Washington County court records runs through the Rules of Public Access to Records of the Minnesota Judicial Branch, not through a standard county data-practices request. That structure comes from Minnesota Statutes section 13.90. It hands judicial data to Supreme Court rulemaking. Home access may not match courthouse access. One more wrinkle: a docket entry can sit in a public register online while the document behind it, a party identifier, or even the whole case stays restricted.

Access rules in plain terms. Rule 4 establishes public-access categories. Rule 8 distinguishes remote and courthouse access. Rule 11 protects restricted identifiers. A court seal or confidential classification is not overcome by a general records request.

The rules source is where remote-access limits and record classifications are maintained.

Washington County Docket Limits

MCRO's remote view is narrower than what a courthouse terminal can show. Several categories simply do not appear there: sealed or expunged files, pending criminal, traffic, and petty-misdemeanor matters in defendant-name searches, OFP and HRO matters, CHIPS records, D16 files, public civil-commitment documents, party street addresses, comment fields, and older material that was never digitized. Juvenile files follow separate access rules of their own.

When a public case will not load, try the case number. A citation number works too. Search those instead of a name. If that fails, MNPAC or a call to Court Administration is the next step. Confidential and sealed records demand the proper access route. Judicial authorization applies where the rules require it.

Docket Records at the Clerk's Office

Court Administration is the docket keeper and records counter for every Washington County District Court division. Minnesota keeps no split between a county clerk and a district clerk for these files. Staff can hand you the local copy route. They can tell you whether a file lives on paper or microfilm and issue official copies. Legal advice is off the table. Choosing a record strategy is your job, not theirs.

Walk in with a simple request and it is usually done on the spot. Expect delays only for larger jobs: multiple documents, microfilm, or files sitting in off-site storage. For the local service image, see Washington County community services, which shows what that county office provides.

Washington County Copy Choices

A screen display is not a certified court document. Washington County's request form wants the court file number, party names, document name, copy counts, requester contact information, and payment if any is due. Plain copies cost nothing. Certification runs $14. One caution before you order: the statewide guidance treats exemplified copies as their own request, so confirm the certification level you need with Court Administration first.

Washington County Court Technology

MCRO arrived in 2023. It replaced the old MPA Remote system after staged rollouts of document, case-register, hearing, and judgment search tools. It is not the filing pipeline. Parties and attorneys file and serve through Minnesota eFile and eServe instead. Nor is it the Minnesota Digital Exhibit System. That system manages courtroom exhibits and never became a general public archive. The state Judicial Branch site rounds things out with official notices, court tools, and statewide access information. Remember the limits. Easier searching does not change the public-access classification of the file underneath.

Washington County Court History

Washington County court records have a longer local history than the current online system. Minnesota's first territorial court session convened in the county in 1849 and handled 60 cases in six days. The 1869 courthouse served the county for more than a century, while the modern Government Center became the active county location in 1975. Historic references can be valuable for research, but they should not redirect a current case search away from the active court.

The Washington County Historic Courthouse remains a county history site. Its role is distinct from the Court Administration counter that maintains present-day District Court records.

Washington County Court Dockets by City

The county's five largest incorporated cities run their own enforcement channels. None offers a separate municipal court docket portal. A state-court case from Woodbury, Cottage Grove, Oakdale, Forest Lake, or Stillwater lands in MCRO and Washington County Court Administration once filed. City administrative or parking records may need a city process first. The cards below sort those local entry points from the District Court register. Nothing gets mixed up.

Woodbury Docket Search

75,102 residents in the 2020 Census; administrative citations have a city process before a possible court complaint.

Cottage Grove Docket Search

38,839 residents in the 2020 Census; the city publishes a schedule, not a searchable court register.

Oakdale Docket Search
